What is an Iron Infusion?
An iron infusion is a procedure where iron is administered directly into a vein (intravenously). This allows your body to replenish iron stores more quickly than oral iron tablets.Most patients receive ferric carboxymaltose, which is commonly completed in approximately 15–30 minutes, followed by a short observation period.
Who May Benefit from an Iron Infusion?
Your doctor may recommend an iron infusion if you have:
- • Iron deficiency with or without anaemia
- • Persistent fatigue related to low iron stores
- • Intolerance or poor response to oral iron tablets
- • Heavy menstrual bleeding causing iron deficiency
- • Iron deficiency during or after pregnancy (when appropriate)
- • Gastrointestinal conditions that reduce iron absorption (such as coeliac disease or inflammatory bowel disease)
- • Chronic kidney disease or other chronic medical conditions
- • Preparation for major surgery when iron deficiency is present
A blood test and medical assessment are required before treatment.
Who Should Not Have an Iron Infusion?
An iron infusion may not be suitable if you:
- • Have an allergy to intravenous iron products
- • Have iron overload disorders (such as haemochromatosis)
- • Have anaemia not caused by iron deficiency
- • Have an active serious infection
- • Have previously experienced a severe reaction to intravenous iron
- • Have certain liver conditions (your doctor will assess suitability)

- • Severe allergic (anaphylactic) reaction
- • Difficulty breathing
- • Swelling of the face or throat
- • Collapse or severe dizziness

What to Expect
- • GP consultation and review of your blood test results.
- • Confirmation that an iron infusion is appropriate.
- • Intravenous cannula inserted into your arm.
- • Iron infusion administered over approximately 15–30 minutes.
- • Observation for approximately 30 minutes after treatment.
- • You can usually return home shortly afterwards.
After Your Iron Infusion
You may resume most normal activities on the same day.Drink plenty of fluids and monitor the infusion site for redness, swelling, or persistent pain.
Seek urgent medical attention if you experience:
- • Difficulty breathing
- • Swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat
- • Severe rash
- • Chest pain
- • Collapse or fainting
Your doctor may arrange repeat blood tests in 6–12 weeks to assess your response.
